Spring Equinox Stories

At the balancing point of the spring equinox why do the old stories matter?

The Spring Equinox marks a powerful turning point in the year — a moment of perfect balance between light and dark.

In Celtic traditions, this sacred time known as Alban Eilir ("Light of the Earth") celebrates renewal, fertility, and fresh beginnings.

When we pause to really listen to the lessons of the world around us, nature teaches us that this is a time to embrace balance and prepare for growth. It's a busy time in the farming calendar and many businesses and there is a general feeling of awakening that blooms with each day of welcome sunshine.

The Celts honoured the equinox with rituals that celebrated the awakening land. Fires were often lit to symbolize the returning warmth of the sun, and flowers such as primrose and daffodil were laid on altars to welcome fertility and abundance. Eggs, seen as symbols of life and rebirth, were decorated or buried in the earth to bless the crops.

Perhaps some of these old rituals are still a part of your life now, and here are some simple balance rituals you can create to bring a connection to this time, and most importantly back to your sense of happiness, wonder and inner 'awakening'.

A simple meditation at sunrise can help connect with the light's return - even better if you can get outside to watch it, and enjoy that serotonin mood boost from the rising sunlight.

Walking in nature and reflecting on what you wish to nurture this season is a beautiful way to align with the equinox's energy. Maybe you feel like being bold and taking off your shoes and socks and really grounding and connecting with the land to call forward this feeling of growth and new beginnings into your being.

Lighting a candle or arranging fresh flowers on your table can symbolize gratitude for the new season ahead.  And pausing to look at either/both are lovely simple meditations to mindfully connect you with the moment.

Gather with friends, with food, drink and perhaps singing and dancing, egg painting and tales of rich growth and spring magic.

Embrace this moment of equilibrium to pause, reset, and welcome the growth and possibilities that spring offers.

We'd love to welcome you to celebrate at our in-person events in Berkshire too. Friday 21st March in the woods at Padworth and Sunday 23rd for our spring equinox social in Caversham, Reading
